My approach to painting the sky and water in this composition was a painterly one, and so I painted the clouds and the surface of the water without a lot of detail; but at the same time I endeavoured to create a softness and luminosity to the clouds and to produce a uniform appearance to the water, using glazes. However, my approach to painting the yacht was slightly different, as I felt it was important to paint Cassiopeia with as much detail and preciseness as I was able so she would appear technically accurate and realistic in the scene.

This wonderful painting of Cassiopeia, as she competes in the 2014 Southern Ionian Regatta, captures the beauty and spirit of the race. The Southern Ionian Regatta is a charity event which takes place annually amongst the beautiful Ionian Islands to the south of Lefkas. Cassiopeia, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439 yacht, finished in thirteenth position in a race with over 130 boats. In 2015, she finished the regatta in eleventh position. This painting shows her sailing towards Sivota. Cassiopeia is a Greek registered yacht. Her sail number is 1673.
