The canvas used for this painting was professionally built by Fine Art Canvases, North Devon. A pink-coloured ground was first painted onto the canvas using Old Holland Cadmium Red Deep mixed with white gesso before the underpainting was begun. This provided the painting with a warm base upon which the cooler blues (of the sky and sea) would sit.
