Painting Light and Realism

This art print is a realistic and carefully observed depiction, lovingly and faithfully reproduced from the original artwork. Every architectural detail — from the texture of the stone, the cobbles in the courtyard, to the subtle tones of the aged exterior — has been rendered to preserve the authenticity and charm of the building. The aim was not only to portray its appearance, but to capture its atmosphere: the sense of heritage, craftsmanship, natural ambient light and coastal calm that defines this special corner of North Devon.

Buildings in Time

There is something deeply comforting about historic buildings like Docton Court Gallery. They ground us in time. In this piece, the soft coastal light and honest realism invite the viewer to pause, to imagine footsteps on cobbles, the salty breeze from the estuary, and the enduring presence of a building that has stood for centuries.

About the Painting

The original painting of Docton Court Gallery was a gift to its owners on their retirement. I wanted to create a painting for them which would show Docton Court from a wonderful perspective. The depiction of natural light added a wonderful brightness to the building and its cobbled courtyard. This resulted in an enhancement of the colours on the building (strong reds and blues) and on the adjoining properties. In giving emphasis to this light and its summertime intensity, I had to create contrast, showing well defined shadows on the building and areas that were in shade; and this resulted in the realism I had hoped for.
