Low Water at Instow Beach
Coastal Art For Your Home
Low Water at Instow (now sold) captures the quiet beauty of Instow Beach at low tide, when the boats rest gently on the sand, waiting for the returning sea. In the distance, across the shimmering estuary, the fishing village of Appledore sits peacefully beneath the wide summer sky. The strong midday light floods the scene, casting crisp shadows and illuminating the bright sands and hulls with a warm, almost dazzling clarity. The painting conveys the stillness and spaciousness of a summer's day on the North Devon coast, where time seems to pause between tides.
Note: Although this painting has sold, Low Water at Instow is available as an art print, as a faithful reproduction of the original painting. See more details about the Low Water at Instow art print futher down the page.
Painting Luminosity
As an artist, it was always my intention to create the Instow painting with a good depth-of-field and a high degree of realism. There is as much interest and detail in the foreground (the boats on Instow beach) as there is in the middle ground (the boats and buildings of Appledore) and beyond. Depicting this scene at low tide resulted in a painting with warmth, in terms of its colouration and 'feel'.
Creating an impression of summer sunlight on the boats added a gentle glow and sense of lived-in atmosphere to the overall realism I was aiming for. I have visited Instow beach many times over the years and it is the kind of beach that always stays with you when you think of picturesque beaches with fine coastal views.
Inspired by Instow Beach
I always enjoy visiting Instow and walking along its beach. It is a place where I can truly appreciate views of Appledore, and also Crow Point, where it joins with the mouth of the River Taw estuary. For me, Instow beach is a place to reflect and contemplate; it's a place of serenity and inspiration.
Collectable Contemporary Coastal Art
The sweep of sand at low tide, dotted with resting boats, evokes a sense of calm and quiet anticipation as the estuary slowly breathes between tides. Across the water, Appledore adds depth and character to the composition, its clustered cottages and maritime heritage forming a gentle counterpoint to the open shoreline. Together, Instow and Appledore create a scene rich in charm and coastal nostalgia.
Bathed in strong summer light, the scene radiates warmth and clarity, making it a bright and uplifting reminder of holidays by the sea, salt-tinged air, and unhurried afternoons. It is both a faithful portrayal of a beloved place and a lasting keepsake of its enduring appeal.
