Yacht Racing Art

Yachts Racing at Cowes Week, Isle of Wight is one of my most detailed maritime racing artworks to date — meticulously crafted to capture the energy, precision and elegance of elite yacht racing.

As a seasoned painter, I invested countless hours into perfecting this scene using only the finest artist-grade paints and premium canvas, ensuring longevity and visual richness for collectors who appreciate true craftsmanship. Every sail angle, every shimmering reflection, the way the light falls on the spinnakers and the tension in the water's surface was studied and rendered with exacting realism.

This painting doesn't just depict a moment at sea — it embodies the passion, discipline and camaraderie that defines competitive sailing. For those who own yachts or race annually during Cowes Week, it's a celebration of the heritage and thrill that only the Solent can offer.

Light and Realism in Marine Art

The most important aspect for me in creating this painting, was how I could execute an impression of luminosity in the scene and add light and contrast that would lend itself further to the overall level of realism I hoped to achieve.

By creating a sense of light on the spinnakers (through the application of carefully painted layers of Titanium White paint) and adding contrast in the form of shadows on the sails, I succeeded in creating an impression of light that worked well in the painting.

This painting captures just one of the many races that take place annually during Cowes Week, at the Isle of Wight. The yacht on the right of the painting is Addiction Logic (sail number GBR 9859T).

About Cowes Week

Cowes Week is the longest-running annual sailing regatta in the world. It first took place in 1826 and has been held almost every year. For the sailing community, the regatta has been part of the British summer social calendar for many years. Cowes Week lasts for seven days and takes place each August in the Solent waters off Cowes in the United Kingdom.

Over the years, the regatta has been visited by members of royalty and other world-famous personalities as well as impressive superyachts and naval vessels.

With up to 600 boats sailing around 30 different courses in one of the busiest commercial stretches of water in the world, the racing at Cowes Week offers the opportunity for amateur sailors as well as professional race-winning teams to take part alongside each other and race in the competitive spirit that Cowes Week is always known for.
