Veolia Environnement Trimaran, Rolex Fastnet Race
Experience the sheer power and exhilaration of ocean racing with this breathtaking large-scale photorealistic painting, capturing a racing trimaran as it charges through the churning waters of the Rolex Fastnet Race just off the Needles, Isle of Wight. Every detail — from the taut sails slicing through the wind to the dynamic interplay of light and foam — brings the scene to life with unmatched realism. The Needles of the Isle of Wight stand solemnly in the background, framing the intense competition with an air of grandeur. The drama of the sea is palpable, with every wave and spray of saltwater echoing the relentless momentum of the vessel.
About the MOD 70 Trimaran
This painting captures a well-known trimaran racing at the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race. Veolia Environnement (skippered by R Jourdain) is a Multi One Design (MOD) 70 series trimaran, comprising a central hull, two floats, and crossbeams. The MOD 70 was developed in 2009 and construction of these 70ft trimarans were underway in 2010. By the end of 2011, seven teams representing three nations had committed to the MOD 70 circuit and four were launched; Veolia Environnement was numbered MOD70 02 and was launched in June 2011.
The Rolex Fastnet Race
The 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race started on Sunday 14th August 2011. Veolia Environnement (sail number FRA02) finished in fourth place (in the multihulls class) to the Fastnet Rock, but finished in first position overall, finishing on Monday 15th August, with a finishing time of 21:06:55. Other multihulls competing were: Race For Water, Gitana 11, Maxi Banque Populaire, Phaedo, Drama Queen, Paradox, Dazzla, Strontium Dog. A record number of 320 boats entered the 2011 Fastnet Race, representing nineteen different countries, with most of the entries from Britain and France.
The Prestige of Maxi Trimaran Racing
There are a number of prestigious races in the 'sport of trimaran racing', some involving sailing solo around the world, some much shorter in duration like the Route du Rhum: a transatlantic, single-handed race held every four years, where one often sees multihull trimarans (in the Ocean Fifty class or larger) sailing from France to Guadeloupe.
The Ocean Racing Multihull Association (ORMA) represents a number of well-known trimarans. The much larger maxi trimarans often compete for the Jules Verne Trophy, which is an impressive award to own for any experienced trimaran skipper.
The Rolex Fastnet Race (in which my painting of Veolia Environnement Trimaran is depicted) takes place every two years over a course of 608 nautical miles. This race starts at Cowes, Isle of Wight, and leaves the Solent through The Needles Channel. The race follows the southern coastline of England westward, through the English Channel, then goes around Land's End, Cornwall, before crossing the Celtic Sea. The race rounds the Fastnet Rock, located off the south-west coast of Ireland, and then heads south, where the race rounds the Isles of Scilly and then finishes at Plymouth.
In 2014, MOD70 02 was bought by US-based Orion Racing. 2025 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Rolex Fastnet Race. The 100th anniversary edition sets sail from Cowes and the finish, is Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, France; a course of 695 miles.
