Fine art painting of J class yachts, racing at Falmouth Bay, Cornwall, capturing British maritime heritage and sailing elegance

A Painting of Three J Class Racing Yachts

J Class Yachts captures a moment of rare harmony between power, precision and wind. Set against the waters of Falmouth Bay during the J Class Regatta, I created this painting to bring together three icons of classic yachting — Ranger, Velsheda, and Lionheart — locked in elegant competition. Their towering rigs and sweeping hulls cut through the sea with quiet authority, evoking an era when yacht racing was as much an expression of craftsmanship and beauty as it was of speed.

Falmouth J Class Regatta

Though I am not a sailor myself, it was clear to me the essence of sailing is found in the dialogue between wind and water, and nowhere was this more evident than when I witnessed the racing of three J Class yachts at Falmouth, in 2015. These vessels do not rush; they advance with purpose. Every sail is finely tuned, every course adjustment deliberate, as crews harness invisible forces to drive vast hulls forward.

In the painting, the yachts appear both powerful and poised, their scale emphasizing the drama of racing machines that rely entirely on skill, balance, and the natural elements.

Spectating at a J Class Sailing Regatta

This painting was inspired by one of my own photographs, when I visited the J Class sailing regatta, at Falmouth, and travelled out onto the water as a spectator (with Solent Rib Charter) and followed the yachts as they raced majestically around the bay. This painting has been painted onto a premium stretched canvas. It was painted using professional New Masters Classic Acrylic paints by Old Holland — a company that has its origins with the Dutch Masters going back to the 17th Century. Old Holland are renowned for the purity and quality of their high-grade pigments. The painting has been protected with a specialized artist varnish.
