J Class Yacht Rainbow JH2
As the artist behind this elegant portrayal of the iconic J Class yacht Rainbow, I set out to capture not just the power and grace of her form but the sophisticated energy of contemporary maritime design. This painting is a celebration of sleek lines, dynamic movement, and the shimmering interplay of light on water — a composition that evokes both heritage and modern luxury. Executed in a modern realistic style, every brushstroke accentuates the yacht's fluid geometry and commanding presence. Encased in a minimalist, contemporary silver and white frame, the artwork is designed to complement upscale interiors, from oceanfront penthouses to private yacht salons. Rainbow isn't just a painting — it's a statement of refined taste for the discerning collector.
J Class yachts are stunning sailing vessels. As an artist, I have watched them race from close-up and enjoy capturing these huge sleek boats onto canvas in my studio. When painting Rainbow, I intentionally set out to depict her elegant lines in a contemporary and stylistic way. By painting her with just the bow and lower part of the huge spinnaker, it revealed a look that worked visually in a very modern way. Keeping my palette limited, I used a small number of paints for this painting and kept the colours in the grey and silver range, yet applied a deep red colour to add artist's 'warmth' and to draw the viewers eye to key areas on the painting. The red proved effective in this respect and confirmed to me as an artist just how well black, white and red work together in a painting's composition.
About the boat...
The multiple award-winning J Class yacht Rainbow was launched at the Holland Jachtbouw shipyard in 2012. Designed by William Starling burgess, Dykstra Naval Architects, Rainbow is true to her original plans.
This J class yacht was based on the original Rainbow boat, winner of the America's Cup in 1934. Her impressive track record and technique, as well as her luxury comfort and style make her to be one of a kind within the J Class community. Rainbow is equipped with an elegant classic Art Deco interior, designed by deVosdeVries Design. Rainbow's innovation and style have received a lot of praise from the industry.
At the 2013 Showboat Design Awards she won the Naval Architecture Award for sailing yachts and was a finalist for the Interior and Exterior Design Awards for sailing yachts as well. On top of that, Rainbow won the award for Best Sailing Yacht for 40m+ at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards. She was the first of the Js to have an innovative, hybrid propulsion and power system.
In design and look, Rainbow has a black hull, gold cove line, red bottom and anodised grey winches and deck fittings. The aluminium hull was built by Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw and meets all the requirements of Lloyds Register, MCA Classification and the J Class Association. Even though she was built to participate in J Class races, Rainbow is also suited for cruising and chartering.
Her overall length is 131 ft (39.89 m), her beam is 21 ft (6.42 m), and her draft is 16 ft (4.88 m). She can accommodate 6 to 8 guests and an additional 6 to 8 crew. Rainbow's cruising speed is 9 knots and her top speed is 11 knots. A major refit was commissioned which has run since 2022 and has seen an upgrade to the hydraulics, new paint, new decks, new winches, new mast, new sails and includes a full engineering refit.
Now known as Rainbow J-KZ1, after being granted her new sail number, she races under the flag of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
This painting of Rainbow was based on a photograph taken by photographer, Alex Irwin, during the 2012 J Class Regatta, Falmouth, Cornwall, when her sail number was JH2.
