Art Print Inspired by the America's Cup

This artwork is an independent artistic interpretation inspired by the race event and competing teams. It is not official merchandise licensed by the teams or event.

My art print captures the electrifying clash between Land Rover BAR and Oracle Team USA during the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series in Portsmouth, 2016. The pinnacle of international boat racing, two elite racing catamarans skim across the water, locked in a high-speed duel just offshore, their foils lifting them clear of the waves as spray and tension fill the air.

The Defender and the Challenger

The scene is charged with drama and precision — every manoeuvre sharp, every second critical. Sleek hulls, towering wingsails, and perfectly choreographed crews combine to create a fast-paced spectacle of skill and cutting-edge technology. It is a celebration of modern yacht racing at its most intense, where power, finesse, and innovation meet on the waters of Portsmouth.

The America's Cup: Past and Present

The America's Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy, first contested in 1851. It features elite sailing teams representing yacht clubs from around the world competing in high-performance, cutting-edge racing yachts. Unlike most tournaments, the defending champion acts as host and sets many of the rules for the next edition, adding a unique strategic element to the competition. Over the years, the event has showcased innovations in yacht design and sailing technology, making it one of the most prestigious and technically advanced events in international sport.

Sailing Sport Racing Art

An art print is more than just a beautiful piece of wall décor — it's a way of capturing the spirit of one of the most unforgettable sailing competitions in the world. For any sailor or racing enthusiast who has sailed on such boats or has spectated from the shoreline, this art print becomes a treasured memento of the competition. It's a gift that brings back the sense of exhilaration and competitive spirit every time they look at it. Experience the thrill of the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series in this high-energy art print of Land Rover BAR vs Oracle Team USA.

Painting The America's Cup Racing Scene

This painting took me many weeks to complete, using traditional fine art painting methods. The painting was painted layer by layer with the finest New Masters acrylic paints by Old Holland, using the best quality pigments. The painting was sold in 2018 to a race steward who assisted at the America's Cup final, in Bermuda, 2017.

I set out with the intention to create a contemporary maritime artwork capturing Land Rover BAR and Oracle Team USA competing in the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series. The scene depicted is technically accurate and every detail has been painstakingly painted in order to achieve a high degree of realism. The Land Rover BAR and Oracle Team USA, Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series, Portsmouth, 2016 art print is a faithful reproduction of this painting.

The Different Stages of The Painting

I began this painting by applying a red-coloured ground over the canvas. This was to give a 'warmth' to the painting (an artist term) instead of it being painted with cooler colours, which often dominate maritime paintings (e.g. blues or pale violets for the sky or water) and although it formed the first layer, small hints of this red would be visible once subsequent layers had been painted. The choice of red was therefore intentional as well as strategic; it meant any red painted later (on the sails and hulls) would become stronger and have a vibrancy that would make the colour stand out very well.
