Saunton Beach
Coastal Art For Your Home
My painting of Saunton Beach (now sold) grew out of a fascination with light itself; not just as something that illuminates the scene, but as the true subject of the work. This sense of luminosity reflects the particular clarity of light I have always noticed at Saunton, where sea, sky, and sand seem to echo one another and dissolve into a single radiant space, especially as the sun sinks low on the horizon. At the northern end of the beach, the Brends Saunton Sands Hotel stands out with its elegant white art-deco building. I worked there as a teenager, and it has remained an enduring landmark ever since — a familiar presence for locals and a welcoming sight for returning visitors drawn to the openness and freedom that Saunton Beach so generously offers.
Note: Although this painting has sold, Saunton Beach is available as an art print, as a faithful reproduction of the original painting. See more details about the Saunton Beach art print futher down the page.
Painting Luminosity
Light played a quiet but powerful role in shaping the mood of the painting. Rather than focusing on too much detail, I allowed the luminosity to soften edges and forms with its transient appearance in the scene. Glimmers of brightness in the water, the air, on the white walls of the hotel, hinted at light-filled space, while smooth, gentle shifts in colour created a sense of calm, openness, and ease.
Inspired by Saunton Beach
I always enjoy visiting Saunton and walking along its beach, to Crow Point, where it joins with the mouth of the River Taw estuary. For me, Saunton beach is a place of tranquillity and a place to breathe, reflect and contemplate. There is a freedom and openness in the landscape that touches the shoreline constantly and reminds me that life is ever in a cycle, and that nature keeps repeating itself in reassuringly familiar ways, whether that is in the wildlife that is found there, the light that shines upon it, or in the perpetual motion of the wind and the ocean throughout the seasons.
Saunton merges with the Braunton Burrows, and has the largest sand-dune system in England. Over the years, it has been used for military exercises and training, and used for location shooting in films. Actor David Niven famously played a scene on the beach in the 1946 film A Matter of Life and Death.
Collectable Contemporary Coastal Art
As a professional seascape painter, I pour time, care, and a great deal of feeling into every painting I make, and this view of Saunton Beach was no different. The work grew through hours of careful layering and quiet refinement, all in pursuit of the sense of light and luminosity I wanted to capture. Each brushstroke was thoughtfully placed, slowly building the calm yet constantly shifting character of the North Devon coastline — a place I know intimately and return to again and again.
