Surfer at Croyde
Coastal Art For the Modern Home
Depicting the waves at Croyde Beach is always a joy for me. There's something truly captivating about that place — when the swell aligns with the wind, the waves seem to come alive with power and grace. This particular painting was born from a sunny morning I spent at Croyde Beach in January, 2022. The sea was in perfect form, rolling in clean six-to-eight-foot waves beneath a beautiful clear sky.
I remember standing on the sand, watching the surfers carve skillfully along those walls of water, utterly in their element. I took many reference photos that day, from different vantage points along the beach, hoping to capture not just the form of the waves, but their rhythm — their energy.
It was then that I began thinking about creating a small series of wave paintings, to create at my studio, with a few pieces celebrating the harmony between the ocean and those who ride it.
A Connection with the Sea
This painting is a reflection of that moment — my attempt to share a little of the wonder I felt watching the light, the motion, and the connection between human and sea.
Seascape Painting
Over the years, I've come to appreciate how deeply seascape art resonates with people — not just visually, but emotionally. There's something inherently calming about the sea. Its rhythms, its vastness, and its ever-changing light seem to speak to something quiet within us.
When I paint coastal scenes, I'm not just trying to capture a view — I'm trying to evoke a feeling of peace, space and connection to nature. I am also trying to capture the energy and movement of water.
High Quality Wave Art
This painting has been painted using professional oil paints by Old Holland — a company that has its origins with the Dutch Masters going back to the 17th Century. Old Holland are renowned for the purity and quality of their high-grade pigments. The painting has been protected with a specialized artist varnish. This painting has been professionally framed to Fine Art Guild standards.

Depicting the Sea in a Painting
Personally, I find that painting the sea helps me stay grounded. It's a meditative process, and I hope that same sense of wellbeing carries through to those who live with the artwork. A well-placed seascape can transform a room, not just aesthetically but emotionally. It can soften a space, lift the mood and offer a daily moment of reflection.
Art that Promotes a Sense of Calm in Your Home
I've often heard from collectors that having a seascape in their home brings a sense of calm and clarity to their environment. Whether it's the soft light of an evening tide or the gentle motion of waves against a harbour wall, these scenes seem to offer a kind of visual breathing space. In a world that can feel fast-paced and cluttered, coastal art invites a moment of pause — a reminder of simpler, quieter places.
Sea-inspired Art: Reconnecting with Nature
For anyone considering coastal art for their home, I'd say it's more than just decoration — it's a way to bring the outdoors in, to reconnect with nature and to create a sanctuary of sorts. I feel privileged to be able to share that experience through my work.
