This page brings together a collection of my favourite studio paintings and art prints (41 in total) inspired by the North Devon coastline. Over the years, countless walks along the South West Coast Path have led me to places of quiet beauty and endless inspiration — often right on my doorstep. Living close to many of these beaches made it easy to head out with my camera, explore the shoreline, and gather reference photographs that would later guide my work back in the studio.
I've returned to many of these beaches time and time again, and each visit feels new. The light shifts, the colours change, and the atmosphere is never quite the same — no two moments are ever identical. From familiar coastal locations such as Instow, Saunton, Croyde and Baggy Point, Woolacombe, Lee Bay, Morte Point, Putsborough, Ilfracombe Harbour, Valley of the Rocks Lynton, Clovelly, Watermouth Cove, Broadsands beach, Barnstaple, and Hartland Quay, my paintings aim to capture a gentle realism and natural luminosity that invites you, the viewer, into the scene.
Memories of North Devon
I hope these works also stir personal memories: perhaps of a family holiday, a birthday or anniversary, a romantic moment, or a happy day spent with friends by the sea. When I begin a painting, my aim is not only to record the landscape as it appears, but to convey the warmth, light, and sense of peace that these places so often offer.

I have visited Saunton many times over the years and enjoyed seeking artistic inspiration from this huge expanse of coastline. My aim with Saunton Beach was to capture the pleasant intensity of the evening light: that beautiful, fleeting quality that transforms everything it touches for a few precious moments and instils a sense of peace and wonder as the warm luminous scene captivates and gladdens onlookers. I also wanted to feature the Brends Saunton Sands Hotel in the composition — as it is such an iconic landmark that has overlooked the beach for many decades.

Eternal Shoreline

This painting depicts a couple walking on the sands at Saunton Beach. The tide is on the way out and the beach looks deserted. The broad wet sands upon which the couple are standing reflect the sweeping clouds of the sky above. As an artist, every time I walk along the entire length of Saunton beach I am left with a sense of enjoyment. In this painting, there is an interesting juxtaposition between the clouds — which appear dreamlike, fascinating and ever-changing — and the shoreline beneath them, which appears mostly unchanging yet pleasingly familiar in its appearance.

Saunton Sand Dunes

When sand dunes become the subject matter of one of my paintings, there must be something about them that sparks my interest artistically. At Saunton, the dunes are impressive. The dunes at Saunton form part of the Braunton Burrows, which is the largest sand dune system in England. When the light is strong and the shadows are deep and sharply defined, the scope for a good dune painting containing plenty of contrast is certain. The dunes at Saunton offer me plenty of ideas when choosing a suitable perspective for my painting compositions. In this painting, I have included figures to show the scale of the dunes. Because the dunes are the primary focus of this painting, I have intentionally kept the sky and clouds soft, light in colour, and not too busy, so not to distract from the dunes.

Saunton Light

In this painting of Saunton, I wanted to create a coastal painting with a silvery shimmer upon the sea's surface. When I took the reference photo for this scene, the clouds in the sky, the luminous light, and the sea, configured themselves so harmoniously and agreeably in one of those rare moments occurring in nature, it presented me with a scene I just could not refuse to paint when I later returned to my studio. The view in this painting is seen from the coastal path, which leads on toward Croyde. From this vantage, I watched the late-morning light pierce the heavy clouds with a pleasing luminosity and filter brightly onto the water to produce the shimmer I had been hoping for.

Evening Serenity at Saunton captures that gentle moment at the close of day when the beach seems to exhale. The last golden light of the sun brushes the shoreline, warming the sand, while the sea holds onto its deep, cool blues in quiet contrast. Above, the clear sky glows softly where the light is strongest, and below, the air feels almost still — a peaceful hush settling in, broken only by the rhythmic sound of the waves meeting the shore.

Blue Expanse, Saunton

It's not often one sees a sky depicted so blue; but on a visit to Saunton beach one bright day in October, some years ago, the sky was such a colour. It was so blue and deep to my eyes, I was almost transfixed by its vibrancy. I have visited Saunton many times, but have never seen the sky so blue, as it was on this occasion. I kept looking up, marvelling at the seeming infinite blueness of the air above me. But it was not only the colour that amazed me, but also the clouds in the sky made an equally lasting impression on me. I was inspired to capture this moment and to portray it at some future point in my studio, a homage to nature's tremendous beauty and richness of colour. This was a moment where light, form and colour had come together in a most pleasing way aesthetically.
To make this scene work as a painting and to give emphasis to the blue sky — and its particular significance — I decided to feature reflections on the wet sand (to mirror the sky) and make the lower half of the painting just as interesting as the top half; this would give me compositional justification for using additional areas where I could apply the same degree of blue. Making the earth as captivating as the sky, offered a natural reason to weave that same luminous blue throughout the composition, allowing it to flow freely across the scene. Had I settled for a stretch of dry, empty sand beneath the sky, the painting would have felt incomplete, as if missing some other potential. Blue is a primary colour that is strong and enduring; it will always be universally loved for its power to uplift and brighten any mood.

When I painted Soft Light at Saunton, I did so with the aim of creating a dreamy, panoramic celebration of sea and sky, inspired by the sweeping beauty of Saunton Sands. The wet, silvery sands shimmer gently beneath a vast stretch of pure azure blue. Above, soft white clouds drift across the sky with an almost luminous presence, as if glowing from within. The whole scene feels open and tranquil — it is a place I have visited many times, and I often find the sense of space and peace here incredible.

Golden Light, Saunton

In this painting, the light from the evening sun is right before the viewer, reaching out and touching everything with its amber and honeyed light. The warm summertime air is golden, its warm yellow hues tint the shoreline with a pleasing appearance. The waves are modest in size, and the waters of the ocean spill gently forward at a steady yet unhurried pace. Saunton is bathed in luminosity and seems to breathe in long, contented sighs, as though the whole coast has settled into a quiet reverence for the day's last embrace. Each grain of sand appears to shimmer with a private secret, reflecting flecks of brilliance back toward the sky. The horizon stretches wide and open, a tender meeting of the sea and sky, where pale clouds dissolve into the golden light.
There is a kindness in this scene — a gentle stillness that invites bare feet and unguarded hearts. The tide moves with patient grace, sketching foaming lines that lace the shore before retreating once more. In this quiet radiance, Saunton becomes more than a place; it becomes a feeling — an enveloping warmth, a soft-spoken promise that even as the sun dips lower, beauty remains, glowing softly in the afterlight.

It was always my intention to create this Instow scene with a good depth-of-field and a high degree of realism. There is as much interest and detail in the foreground (the boats on Instow beach) as there is in the middle ground (the boats and buildings of Appledore) and beyond. Depicting this scene at low tide resulted in a painting with warmth, in terms of its colouration and 'feel'. Creating the impression of warm summer sunlight on the boats and sand added to the overall realism I was aiming for, as an artist. I have visited Instow beach many times over the years and it is the kind of beach that always stays with you when you think of picturesque beaches with fine coastal views.

I have painted many versions of Ilfracombe harbour, but this one has been one of my favourites. I wanted to capture an impression of the golden evening light spilling across the harbour and the cliffs that overlook it. The warm evening glow touches the quayside shops and boats with a pleasing summertime light. There is a sense of serenity in this painting that represents more than a pleasant state of calm: it is a time of rest, when all the boats are back in harbour after a day's fine sailing, when people can relax and take stock of the day in the harbour's picturesque surroundings.

High Tide Ilfracombe Harbour

Boats are gathered together at the fullness of the tide. The nearby cliffs become a silent witness to a full harbour where yachts sway lightly on their moorings. It is not yet peak season, but soon the harbour will be a hive of activity, where visitors will enjoy boat trips, local sailors will enjoy a fine day's sailing, fishing trawlers will leave the harbour in search of good fishing grounds, and the quayside will throng with onlookers, appreciating the charm of this picturesque fishing harbour.
St. Nicholas Chapel sits proudly upon the top of Lantern Hill, providing elevated views of the harbour. Nearby, the impressive statue of Verity, holds the sword of truth in her hand and looks out to sea like a silent sentinel. In painting this scene, I set out to capture the landmarks, charm and variety of colour that adorns this picturesque harbour. It is the kind of place that calls you back time and time again.

Coastal Swell

Water is restless, hardly ever still, yet it moves at nature's behest and is directed to where it must go. Here, in this painting, the water swells towards the completion of full tide (at Cheyne Beach, Ilfracombe) and its heavy motion surges ever forward, without restraint, causing the rolling waves to break upon exposed rocks like mighty walls of accumulated energy. Gulls gather overhead, the air filled with salty spray; they circle, turn, and fly swiftly across the air currents that rise above the water's surface.
This familiar coastal activity, this impression of life and movement, was how I wished this painting to be: its realistic depiction of natural forces that join and intensify as the water builds to its own symphonic crescendo. It reveals how awe-inspiring the ocean can be, and how such moments can captivate and draw people into the present moment as they watch and appreciate the motions of the coastline.

The Cliffs at Flat Point, near Lee Bay

For me, as an artist and keen coastal walker, the stretch of North Devon coastline between Ilfracombe and Lee Bay is one of the most picturesque and inspiring sections of the South West Coast Path. I often think the land here meets the sea in a dramatic, but natural, expression of form and colour, where towering cliffs rise sharply from tranquil blue waters.
At Flat Point, the cliffs take on a particularly striking character. When I see the sunlight spill across their rugged faces, they reveal layers of rock shaped by centuries of wind and waves. In calm conditions, following a lengthy period of dry weather, the sea below sometimes settles into a clear luminous blue, creating a beautiful contrast with the warm tones of the cliffs above.

How to Order This Painting
Ordering this painting is easy. Simply email me your contact details and let me know the title of the painting you wish to purchase (i.e. The Cliffs at Flat Point, near Lee Bay) and I will email you an invoice so you can make your payment. Please supply your full name, address and delivery address (if it is different from your home address) email address and telephone number — these details will have to go on the invoice. I will also have to provide this information to the delivery courier, who will require this information from me in order to deliver the artwork to you.
Once I have received the full payment from you for the artwork, I will carefully package the painting (include its certificate of authenticity) and prepare it for collection by the courier. I shall keep you updated by email and let you know when the courier will be collecting the artwork from me, and I will also provide you with a tracking reference number, which will allow you to check the status of the painting on the courier's website once it has been collected from me. The Whole Beach to Themselves

A solitary figure enjoys walking her dog across the empty expanse of Croyde beach. It is the heart of winter, yet the beach offers this figure a natural beauty that only sky, sea and land can gift. Here, the beach is crowned by a sweeping sky of impressive cloud forms. Sunlight touches the headland, marking out the paths and slopes where countless visitors have explored before. The land here has a sense of permanence, but it also has a fragility. This vulnerability is where change occurs, but this change is always part of nature's ancient way.
Whenever I am looking for inspiration, as an artist, I always treasure my moments in nature while land, sea and sky ever combine to reach a pleasing balance. This beach is always changing, people too will visit and fill it with the sounds of holiday happiness and pass by again one sunny day, as they impart their own unique impressions on the place. Beaches can be places of peaceful solitude where people can find harmony and space for reflection, or a place to immerse oneself into the present moment and enjoy the space it offers.

The Light Breaks Through at Croyde

Here is the winter light gloriously bright, though still somewhat low in the sky above Croyde Beach. The dazzling morning light pierces through the fair-weather clouds and illuminates the shoreline with a pleasant luminosity. This light transforms everything in a moment; the grass becomes brightened by it, the wet sand glistens and sparkles into life as its many light-coloured grains shed their dullness for a time.
When such light appears, I find I am witnessing a lifting of something intangible and almost hard to define. It is certainly a moment of beauty, revealed — an outer impression of what nature can be — but it is also something else, an inner impression, a feeling, a freshly-discovered optimism, that something within has become freer and brighter because of the light.

The Sweeping Sky

The winter morning light shines onto the breadth of Croyde beach in another painting inspired by luminosity. Huge clouds are piling in from the west, but there is a grandeur about them that lends itself wonderfully to the 'artist's brush'. An open section of the sky reveals its pale blue colour against these slowly-moving white-edged giants, as if they are ready to frame it — but not cover it entirely. This light will endure. The clouds add a powerful balance to the emptiness of the beach. The wet sand and the sea foam add detail and interest to the scene and also contribute to its pleasing depth-of-field. One can almost feel the salty freshness of the cool air and hear the waves as they roll in from the Atlantic ocean. There is an impression of emptiness and space here that has become suddenly adorned by a greater beauty and sense of light.

A wave holds within its powerful embrace water that has travelled across an ocean, ever in motion to find its way to distant shores. To this place it has travelled, driven by currents, building upon the momentum upon which it was carried and moved. This wave symbolizes the power of ocean water and depicts its seemingly final action as it uses all its energy to crash dramatically and gloriously upon the shoreline. Yet most of this water is received back into the sea; and so a cycle of oceanic motion continues within nature's infinite presence.
I was inspired to paint this wave after watching the waves building at Croyde Beach one sunny spring morning. I love to add realism to my paintings, all those little details I like to include, nothing is left out: the foam trails, the highlights on the foaming wave crests, even the shadows where the sunlight momentarily fails to reach. I find the whole experience of watching waves captivating, it places you right in the present moment, completely undistracted by the past or the concerns of future days and what may or may not be.

Stand on Croyde beach when the tide is out and you will be rewarded with a great perspective of Baggy Point. This verdant headland, with its cliffs and pathways, provides splendid views of Croyde beach, Woolacombe and even parts of Saunton beach. Follow the coastal trail as it meanders toward the very tip, and you'll find yourself wrapped in wide, uninterrupted views — sea and sky unfolding in every direction. It's the kind of place that makes you pause, breathe deeply, and simply look.
In painting this beach scene, I wished to create a depiction of Croyde beach that captured an almost panoramic perspective of Baggy Point, not just a small part of it. Sometimes, one needs to stand back from it to truly appreciate its scale.

In this painting, I wanted to create an appealing freshness and realistic representation of how the evening light could be portrayed at Croyde beach. Instead of using warm sunset colours, I opted for the cooler blue colours to depict the evening sky. Disappearing behind a distant impressive stretch of cloud, the sun's light is still visible; but its tenuous rays leave the viewer in no doubt that within minutes, the sun will be taking its leave of the day as it sinks beyond sight and disappears behind the visible horizon.
There is a strongly defined impression of brightness and sky-filled radiance here that appears with it own beautiful intensity. Lying at the very heart of this painting, its core is light: spilling outward, reaching every part of the beach that is not yet occluded by its luminous presence within the natural landscape.

As an artist who has painted many depictions of Morte Point over the years, standing on Woolacombe Beach can give a whole new perspective to Morte Point. I am so used to viewing the rocky headland from the elevated location of Baggy Point, that I sometimes forget how much different another perspective of it can be. In this painting, the warm, welcoming sands of Woolacombe Beach provide an equally charming vista of this well-known landform to reveal its picturesque coastline beneath a pleasant sky in late spring: that time of the year when the beach can still be relatively serene and uncrowded, a place where you can breathe and find some peace in nature's coastal beauty. Seeing Morte Point at sea level opened up an interesting creative opportunity for me as an artist, and in this painting I have explored this fully.

Here yachts can take shelter and set their anchors firm in the sand, knowing they can weather any storm that might encroach this picturesque cove. I have visited this place many times over the years and have enjoyed the scenic journey to reach it. This view is from the coastal path, and it depicts not only Watermouth Cove but also the distant cliffs at Combe Martin.
This place is a haven for wildlife: gulls soar high over the nearby clifftops, gliding happily on the thermals; here you may see a solitary kestrel hover with precision and purpose, steady and unmovable against any prevailing breeze. Watermouth Cove is full of pleasant surprises. Nature never disappoints here. The waters here are a magnet for sailors who love to sail along the North Devon coastline, and the landscape itself draws walkers annually — who gladly journey on the pleasant coastal path that links between the town of Ilfracombe and Combe Martin.

When you walk down to the harbour, it is like walking back in time. The tightly-positioned, cosily-clustered buildings, the steeply-winding cobbled street, give way to a sheltered harbour surrounded by an impressive fortified stone wall. Clovelly has a charm like no other British harbour. Although it is relatively small, quaint and honest, it is a traditional English fishing village and remains so today. I have visited Clovelly numerous times through my life, and it remains a jewel in the North Devon coastline. For the composition, I wanted to depict the village from the vantage of the harbour wall, which provided me with the perfect view. The trees seem to hug the village in a strange coastal intimacy where nature joins comfortably with the traditional architecture of the past.

The rugged, sunlit cliffs and their spectacular height and forms, present an impressive spectacle for any visitor. From this height, the sea sounds so distant, yet it is just there, ever present — a reminder of nature's quiet strength and timeless rhythm.
Over the years, I have visited the Valley of the Rocks many times and have painted several paintings of this dramatic and iconic coastline. In this painting, my intention was to achieve a sense of luminosity and contrast, presenting the sky, the sea, and parts of the land with the heightened brightness of the sun's final touch before the day gently slips into dusk.

This is Barnstaple in the springtime: pink blossom adorns the trees along the Strand's riverside area; to the right, the tower of Holy Trinity Church rises with quiet confidence and stands as a steadfast and faithful landmark, watching over the town as it has for generations; and the many arches of Barnstaple Long Bridge comfortably span the River Taw where water rests in near-perfect stillness. Tranquil reflections reveal their mirrored counterparts on the still water.
Seen from the South West Coast Path — near the Anchorwood Bank development — this view of the Strand feels especially magical. From an artist's eye, it's one of those rare perspectives where everything falls into harmony — history, architecture, nature, and the river meeting in a moment of quiet beauty.

There are times when nature speaks in almost plain tones to me as an artist. This dialogue is conveyed, but it does not arrive in words; yet it reaches me as a quiet internal reflection — an inspired prompting to investigate a higher purpose to life. It is as if the very currents of the air and sea have played their part, becoming a catalyst to a series of thoughts that enable me to give consideration to an aspect of life that needs attention. Poets read nature in the same way and often know what nature is suggesting. Here, the sense of change began its first stirrings within me — this year had relevance for me.
Here, in this scene at Hartland Quay, the waves, the gulls, the wind, all reflect a new-found impetus, something that soon will be. It is of course subjective, but still palpable to me, like a sudden revelation being dropped in my lap for me to contemplate and examine. This sense of change is about moving forward to brighter times.

How to Order This Painting
Ordering this painting is easy. Simply email me your contact details and let me know the title of the painting you wish to purchase (i.e. Lee Bay in Summer) and I will email you an invoice so you can make your payment. Please supply your full name, address and delivery address (if it is different from your home address) email address and telephone number — these details will have to go on the invoice. I will also have to provide this information to the delivery courier, who will require this information from me in order to deliver the artwork to you.
Once I have received the full payment from you for the artwork, I will carefully package the painting (include its certificate of authenticity) and prepare it for collection by the courier.
