South Hams Beaches: an Artist's Depiction in Oils
The Beauty of Collecting South Hams Art
The South Hams in South Devon has always held a kind of quiet magic for me, as an artist: a land where time seems to soften at the edges every time I walk along its rolling hills or stand at the edge of a windswept cliff, looking out across the ever-changing sea. The patchwork fields, dotted with sheep and stitched together by ancient hedgerows, shift in colour with the seasons: from the fresh green of spring to the golden hush of autumn. And then there's the light — the amazing light! It pours across the landscape like a whisper, turning the mundane into the miraculous. I could never tire of painting it. This blog page features a selection of oil paintings depicting some of, what I believe to be, the best beaches in the South Hams region.
As an artist, I find endless inspiration here. The sparkle of the tide retreating across Salcombe sands, or the drama of a storm rolling over Thurlestone — it all speaks in a language beyond words. My work isn't about perfect likeness; it's about emotion, about capturing how this place feels.
There's a particular kind of soulfulness to the South Hams that artists through the years have been drawn to. From the quiet coves at Hope Cove to the winding lanes of Totnes, creativity seems to bloom naturally from the soil. This land gives more than just beauty; it gives clarity. It reminds you why you create in the first place. Each brushstroke is a thank you to this land that endlessly fuels my imagination.
SALCOMBE
It was during a visit to North Sands Beach in Salcombe that something quietly shifted in me. I hadn't gone there in search of inspiration — just a walk, really, along the nearby coast path, to breathe in the sea air. But as I stood at the edge of the beach, with the tide slipping in and the light catching the water in gentle flashes under the bright blue sky, I felt that familiar, quiet pull — the one that tells you there's something here worth holding onto.
There's a particular kind of beauty at North Sands that doesn't shout for attention. It's in the blues of the water, the curve of the coastline, the stillness between waves. Back in my home studio, with the smell of oil paint in the air and my brushes laid out before me, I returned to that scene in my memory. The painting took shape slowly, layer by layer, as I tried to honour the calm and quiet soul of that place.
I didn't want to simply replicate the view; it was more about capturing the mood, the soft hush of sea and sky, and that moment of stillness I'd carried home with me. It became one of those rare paintings where the process itself felt like an extension of the experience. I'm grateful for that morning on the beach, and for how North Sands, in its quiet way, reminded me why I paint at all: to remember, to feel, and to share something that words can't always quite reach.
THURLESTONE
I've always felt there's something quietly magical about Thurlestone, a small village tucked away in the South Hams of Devon. The sea is never far, and the rhythm of the tides seems to set the pace for everything else. I have painted two originals of Thurlestone beach. These two oil paintings can be viewed at Mayne Gallery, Kingsbridge.
One of the things I love most is the rock – Thurlestone Rock – that arching, sea-worn shape that gives the village its name. It stands just offshore, like a quiet sentinel in the waves. There's something ancient about it, like it's been watching over this place for centuries. It's not just a rock – it's part of the soul of the place.
Thurlestone is a peaceful coastal village, known for its unspoiled beaches, and a relaxed, timeless charm that reflects the quiet beauty of the English countryside. Whatever the weather, it is a place that will captivate those in search of inspiration.
BANTHAM
Tucked away in the rolling green folds of the South Hams in Devon, Bantham Beach is one of those rare places that seems to strike the perfect balance between natural beauty, unspoiled charm, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It's not just a beach — it's a place that people return to year after year, drawn by its wide golden sands, the ever-changing skies, and the gentle rhythm of the tides. Whether you're there in the height of summer with sand between your toes, or in the quieter months when the wind shapes the dunes and the sea takes on a wilder tone, Bantham always feels like a gift.
One of the first things that strikes you about Bantham is the view. As you come over the hill and the coastline opens up before you, the sight of Burgh Island sitting just offshore is a real showstopper. The beach itself stretches out in a generous sweep, bordered by dunes and grassy headlands, with the River Avon (or Aune, locally) winding its way into the sea to the left. It's a haven for surfers thanks to its consistent waves and sandy bottom, but it's just as lovely for those who simply want to stroll, paddle, or sit quietly and take it all in.
There's something refreshingly low-key about Bantham. Despite its popularity, it's managed to resist overdevelopment. The beach is owned and managed by a local estate, which has helped keep it well cared-for but unspoiled. Even the village of Bantham itself feels like a step back in time, with its thatched cottages and winding lanes.
Bantham has a way of getting under your skin. It's not just about the scenery (though that certainly helps); it's the atmosphere — relaxed, open, easy-going. It's a place where families build sandcastles and chase dogs into the waves, where locals greet each other by name, and where you feel, even as a visitor, that you belong.
Whether you're watching the sun set behind the island or catching the first light of morning glinting on the surf, Bantham quietly reminds you of the simple pleasures in life — fresh air, open space, and the joy of being close to the sea. I have painted four different depictions of Bantham Beach, each one adding its own unique take on this place.
BURGH ISLAND
Just off the coast from Bantham, nestled in the heart of the South Hams, lies Burgh Island — a tidal island steeped in history, mystery, and natural beauty. At low tide, you can wander across the sandy causeway that connects the island to the mainland, feeling the crunch of sand underfoot as the sea briefly recedes to reveal this magical path. When the tide is in, the island is entirely cut off, and the only way across is by a quirky sea tractor.
Burgh Island is perhaps best known for its iconic Art Deco hotel, which has welcomed famous guests over the years, including Agatha Christie, who was inspired to set two of her novels here. There's something timeless about the place — whether it's the way the sunlight dances off the waves or the quiet hush that falls when the tide rolls in and the island becomes its own world again. Even if you're not staying at the hotel, the island is worth exploring. The walk to the summit offers sweeping views of the coastline, and there's a peaceful, reflective quality to the place that's hard to describe.
I couldn't resist creating my own interpretation of Burgh Island. It was inevitable that I would paint it, as it is such an iconic landmark in the South Hams region. I kept the colours light and uplifting: bright greens for the sunlit grass and vibrant light blue for the sky. I chose to depict the scene with the tide low, so I could include the warm sandy colours in the composition.
For locals and visitors alike, Burgh Island holds a special place in the heart of South Devon. It's a place where the wild beauty of nature meets a touch of old-world glamour, where stories linger in the sea air, and where every visit feels just a little bit like stepping into a different time. Whether you come for a paddle on the beach, or simply to sit and watch the sea, Burgh Island has a quiet magic all of its own.
HOPE COVE
Tucked away in the South Hams, Hope Cove is located in one of those rare corners of the world that seems to hold time still. The curve of the bay, the weathered boats resting on the sand, and the way the light shifts over the cliffs — it's all endlessly inspiring. There's a certain softness to Hope Cove, a quiet poetry in the way the village meets the sea. The cottages nestle into the hillside like they've grown there, and the sea breathes gently in and out of the harbour, sometimes with a whisper, sometimes with a roar.
Each painting I create of Hope Cove is like a token, a way of preserving not just a scene, but a feeling. It's not just the landscape I'm painting, it's the calm, the wonder, the light, and the sense of motion — and stillness — this place brings.
Hope Cove in Devon has long drawn artists with its quiet charm and ever-changing coastal light. The soft curves of the sandy beaches, the rugged cliffs, and the shifting colours of the sea create a natural canvas that feels alive throughout the day. Painters often find inspiration in the contrast between the calm village atmosphere and the dramatic Atlantic horizon, capturing moments that feel both peaceful and powerful. It's a place where creativity flows easily, carried on the sea breeze and the rhythm of the tides.

Exclusivity
My paintings can be purchased direct from my website or from select, established art galleries that have my personal endorsement. This ensures that exclusivity around my artworks continues. Exclusivity has always proved vital, because as a practising fine artist with over thirty years experience it elevates my work; and each year the market value of my artworks increases significantly. By limiting availability — whether through curated releases, bespoke commissions, or selective gallery representation — it cultivates an aura of rarity and distinction. This sense of uniqueness has always signalled to my clients and collectors that they're investing in more than just a painting; they're acquiring a piece of artistry that few will ever own. In the art world, prestige isn't just built on skill, it thrives on perception, story, and scarcity. Exclusivity enables my collectors to feel part of an elite circle, where ownership signifies discernment, status, and alignment with my style.
